Is Eastglen pool going to close?

The Program and Service Review Q4 2018 Status Update (CR_6433) report presented to City Council on November 7, 2018 identifies facilities that perform differently than others. The report provides options for City Council consideration to explore repurposing, replacing or closing Scona, Eastglen Leisure Centre and Oliver Outdoor Pool.

City Council has not yet had a chance to weigh in on how to balance budget considerations with the value of the service to the community.

City Council will determine whether these ideas will move forward and had a first opportunity to ask questions about the report at a City Council meeting on Wednesday November 7, 2018.  City Council will also have the opportunity to hear from the public on City of Edmonton services through the Budget Public Hearing process starting November 15, 2018. They may choose to further discuss some of the service review recommendations during their budget deliberations beginning November 28, 2018.

A bit of background on the Program and Service Review: in 2015, City Council directed the Administration to examine and evaluate all City services for efficiency, effectiveness and relevance.

Council felt that every accountable organization has a responsibility to periodically perform extensive reviews of its programs and services to determine if they are still meeting the needs of all Edmontonians in our evolving city.

The Program and Service Review is one of many continuous improvement initiatives across the City of Edmonton.  We will continue to participate in budget deliberations to provide options and recommendations to City Council.  Any decisions regarding our recreation centres will include detailed public information sessions as we determine our next steps.
